Highway 51 North

Highway 51 North
acrylic on unprimed canvas
28 x 28 inches
Jim Sweazy, 1983
This Ford station wagon is just off the road going north out of Mountain Home, Arkansas. My early works are strongly photo-realist, as evidenced by the out-of-focus blades of grass which were quite close to my camera. One of these is washed out by the intense reflection of light coming off the front bumper. Applying acrylic paint to wetted sections of raw canvas gives the effect of a fresco, as the paint dyes the canvas, and all brush marks disappear. This painting was in the 26th Delta Show in Little Rock, attended by then-Governor Bill Clinton.
